BONUS: Chaos & The Butterfly Effect

The sense-making of purpose is often used as a way to try and tame lifeforce. Lifeforce without the structure of purpose can create what feels like chaos. As we learn more about how the world works when we align with the Four Forces, we can see how the order of Purpose works together with lifeforce.  Our understanding of what seems like randomness and chaos is evolving.

Life Force Is Chaos

Experiencing the power of a hurricane from the ground can easily be described as chaos. Life around you is suddenly thrown into complete disarray, and you are at the mercy of what seems like chaotic, random action all around. When viewed from above, there is a beautiful order to a hurricane. And yet, even though it seems ordered, at the same time is unpredictable and seems to change course randomly. With all the technological advances, why can’t we know for sure if we need an umbrella or to flee for shelter?

A new science has emerged called Chaos Theory: studying the nonlinear and unpredictable. While diving into the theory is beyond the scope of this course, it gives us some concepts to think about with regards to deep Growth and Lifeforce.

The first is that often chaos is not just randomness or a lack of order; it can be what happens at the transitions between order and disorder. For example, water becomes chaotic as it boils and changes from water to steam.

Second, the famous butterfly effect offers the idea that incredibly small changes in a complex system can result in big changes. In the classic example, a butterfly flapping its wings in one part of the world can directly impact the formation of a hurricane in another part of the world. The reason we cannot predict a hurricane with 100 percent accuracy is because there is no way to know the exact conditions at every moment.

Chaos Theory explores the paradox and dance of order and chaos, or in Four Forces terms, Purpose and Growth. We cannot control all the variables, and life invites us to learn to feel the deeper order in the midst of the chaos. Everything is evolving and changing. Nothing is static, and yet we can learn to dance with the chaos and see what emerges. As philosopher Alan Watts said, “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.”
