Power Exercise

Take a moment to pick something to look at. It can be a person, or a situation, or a problem that you are trying to resolve.

1. Close your eyes, and consciously shift your perspective to powerlessness. Here are some ways of evoking that perspective and feeling:

  • Visualize yourself as small and see the other person or situtation as bigger than you are.
  • Think of a time you felt powerless
  • Say the words “I am powerless.”  or “That person is more powerful than I am.”
  • Play with what words make you feel smaller and powerless. “The problem is impossible.”  “They won’t stop doing x”
  • Notice what words work.

2.) How does it feel from the perspective of powerless? What information do you get? How would you move forward from that perspective?  What do you like about it? Dislike?

3.) Now shift your perspective to Power-over. Here are some ways of evoking that perspective and feeling:

  • Visualize yourself as bigger and see the other person or situtation as smaller than you are.
  • Think of a time you felt angry, or justified.
  • Say the words “I am dominant.”  or “I am more powerful than that person.”   “I am better than that person.”
  • Play with what words make you feel dominant and power-over. “I will make it happen.” “Whatever it takes…”
  • Bring all your energy up in to your chest. Imagine you are “The Hulk” superhero.
  • Notice what words work.

4.) How does it feel from the perspective of power-over? What information do you get? How would you move forward from that perspective?  What do you like about it? Dislike?  How does this feel different than powerless?

5.) Now bring your attention to aligned power.  Invoke “The Stance” by relaxing into yourself.” Try these different statements:

I am powerful and so are they.
I am in collaboration with others and with life.
I can get what I want and so can they.
The problem is showing us something, what is it?
How can I collaborate with life on this?

6. How does this feel different than powerless or power-over? What information or insights did you get? How do you move forward from this perspective?
